Annie Leibovitz
1949, USA

Short biography
In the 1960s, Leibovitz attended the San Francisco Art Institute, where she studied painting and photography. Photographers such as Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson influenced her during her time at the San Francisco Art Institute. "Their style of personal reportage - taken in a graphic way - was what we were taught to emulate."

For several years, she continued to develop her photography skills while working various jobs, including a stint on a kibbutz in Israel. When Leibovitz returned to the United States in 1970, she started her career as staff photographer, working for the just launched Rolling Stone magazine. In 1973 she was named chief photographer of Rolling Stone, a job she would hold for 10 years. In 1980 she made her most remarkable picture, during a shoot with John Lennon. Leibovitz was the last person to photograph Lennon - he was killed five hours later. Other famous sitters were Bruce Springsteen (cover Born in the USA), Kate Moss and Johnny Depp, Queen Elizabeth, Bill Gates, Keith Haring and Barack Obama.

In 1991, Leibovitz was the second living portraitist and first woman to show at the National Portrait Gallery. Many exhibitions followed, including important shows at the Brooklyn Museum and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington. Leibovitz is considered to be one of the leading portrait photographers of this time.
